True to the Faith: Great Online Publication at LDS.org

One of my favorite recent LDS publications is now available online: True to the Faith: A Gospel Reference. I’ve given this booklet out to many people in our ward and have found it a handy general reference and useful tool for lessons. As Roasted Tomatoes points out in a recent post, it’s great to have a relatively reliable publication giving Mormon doctrine without quite so much “Mormon opinion.”

Here, for example, is part of the entry “Adoption”:

Children are entitled to be raised by parents who honor marital vows and who provide love and support. Adoption can be a great blessing for many children who are born without this opportunity.

When a child is conceived out of wedlock, the best option is for the mother and father of the child to marry and work toward establishing an eternal family relationship. If a successful marriage is unlikely, they should place the child for adoption, preferably through LDS Family Services. Placing the infant for adoption through LDS Family Services helps unwed parents do what is best for the child. It ensures that the child will be sealed to a mother and a father in the temple, and it enhances the prospect for the blessings of the gospel in the lives of all concerned. Adoption is an unselfish, loving decision that blesses the birth parents, the child, and the adoptive family.

And here is part of the entry pertaining on the Temple and the wearing of temple garments (see the LDS Website for more about the Mormon temple):

Wearing the Temple Garment

Once you are endowed, you have the blessing of wearing the temple garment throughout your life. You are obligated to wear it according to the instructions given in the endowment. Remember that the blessings that are related to this sacred privilege depend on your worthiness and your faithfulness in keeping temple covenants.

The garment provides a constant reminder of the covenants you have made in the temple. You should treat it with respect at all times. You should not expose it to the view of those who do not understand its significance, and you should not adjust it to accommodate different styles of clothing. When you wear it properly, it provides protection against temptation and evil. Wearing the garment is an outward expression of an inward commitment to follow the Savior.

Well said.

  1. I expressed similar thoughts last May (04) at Doctrinal:net. To be honest, I’ve been disappointed with the poor amount of use it appears to have had, at least in my area. In my ward it was handed out to the youth, but that was it. Perhaps I need to take on your more proactive approach and distribute it myself. I admit that I don’t have a copy with my scriptures that I can refer to in classes…probably a good place to start. Thanks for the reminder Jeff!
