“No, Really, Just Call Me Jeff”

Something I’ve said a time or two when someone takes the name of Deity in vain.

Sometimes people get it, laugh, and adjust their language.

  1. That’s funny! Unfortunately, I know people who say that a lot. I’ll have to try and use that on them sometime. Well, if it’s alright with you.

  2. I usually say “Really?? Where?!” and look around side to side. Confuses the heck out of people…

  3. People don’t seem to have a clue what “Lord’s name in vain” means. It certainly has nothing to do with cussing.

First off, the word “god” is a title, not a name. I never hear anyone using any of the names/titles like Yahweh, El or Elohim in an unseemly way.

Using the “G-word” or the “GD-words” as epithets in no way breaks any commandment, no matter how it may offend someone’s ears.

  4. I usually say “What He has to do with this?” and the person says “He? Who?”…

Always work to make someone understand what is to take His name in vain.

  5. One time I tented my hands and bowed my head. When the person asked what I was doing, I said that I thought they were praying because they were calling on G_d.

  6. I used to do that all of the time. Until I thought of the inherent blaspheme and self aggrandizement in the comment. Now, I just let other’s comments just slide.

  7. I’m with Travis…what good does it do to answer a blasphemy with another, especially when one is probably an unintentional sin and the other is done with deliberate aforethought?

On the other hand, if it does get one to think about the blasphemy that one is conveying, then it may be for the good. But, if it is just to answer blasphemy with another blasphemy, then it may not be justified…especially when the second blasphemy is so well thought out and considered

    My 2cents,
    Andrew

  8. One more comment. When someone uses the word “god” as an expletive, how do you know they’re referring to your version of a god, as opposed to one of the multitude of gods people have worshipped since time began?

How can you claim blasphemy when you can’t know which god the speaker has in mind when using the term? Yahweh doesn’t have a corner on the god market. Don’t forget Shiva, Isis and all the others.

  9. I’m not too keen on hearing anyone use the name of ANY deity lightly.

That said, if someone sincerely believes that using the name of deity to curse their transmission is form of worship, who am I to question…
