LDS Events in Phoenix This Week?

Hey, I’m about to take a plane to Phoenix to attend the CoDev 2008 conference on open innovation in Scottsdale this week. Any interesting LDS-oriented events going on in the area? Let me know at jeff at jefflindsay dot c0m. Might not have time to get away, but always like to know what’s happening.

  1. If you had come out a week ago, and given me the heads up, I would’ve invited you to our Elders’ Quorum activity.

If you google Quorum unity through superior firepower thoughtsonlds, you should find the write up… 😉

I don’t know of any LDS events next week. The Mesa Temple’s Easter pagent is always a big deal, but you’re a bit early for that. The local website for Phoenix events can be found here.

It will probably be warmer here than Wisconsin next week…

  2. If you stay until Saturday (Jan 26), Dr. Donald W. Parry, BYU Professor of Hebrew, will be doing a fireside on the Dead Sea Scrolls. Best of all, its free.

BYU Alumni emails states that Dr Perry is “Part of the international team of translators working on the Dead Sea Scrolls,[and he] will present an LDS perspective on the Dead Sea Scrolls and explain
what the scrolls tell us about the Bible, the Prophets, and the Savior.

Unfortunately I can’t go, so if you do, take good notes and post them here or email them to me.

    Here’s the details:

    January 26, 2007
    7:00 pm
    LDS Tempe Institute at ASU
    100 South McAllister Ave.
    Tempe, Arizona
(you’ll need to park in the Institute parking lot)

  3. I would like to encourage Jeff to hang around and listen in to this talk 😀

Please, for those of us who don’t get squat here in Australia 😀

I feel that we are lacking good LDS scholars or at least vocal scholars here in Australia. I am no where near scholar material but I do enjoy listening in.

    Enjoy,
    Peter

  4. Jeff, yes, there is a great LDS event that I’d like you to be aware of (while you’re in our neck of the woods)!!! At the Mesa Temple Visitor Center there is the “Reflections of Christ” Exhibit. An exceptional photographer, Mark Mabry, was commissioned to do a set of pictures depicting the Savior’s life. There are 26 pictures and a ‘making of video’ (which is a must see). For a small ‘taste’ of what you can expect, check out the second video at http://www.reflectionsofchrist.org . We are working hard to get a good website up, but for now we have a blog.

Also, I am in the last picture of the exhibit (the Ascension scene). That probably would not have been possible without your site (jefflindsay.com) as I am exmo that came back and that site greatly helped..

Enjoy the weather and I hope you get a chance to go to the Visitors Center!

  5. Todd, that’s a great idea. I’ll definitely try to do that on Tuesday or Wednesday evening. And wow, I’m so glad you made it back. Can I ask which one you are in that photo at the exhibit?

And Peter, how interesting that you would mention Australia. Just a couple hours ago I had a fabulous call with an entrepreneur in Australia and learned about some amazing inventive work there that we may be taking on. In fact, we may be able to help a couple of great Australian inventions become more established over here, and that could mean a future visit to that fabulous continent. I hope I’ll be asking about LDS events in Australia someday soon!

Meanwhile, he’s one example of an Australian invention that has changed the world for good: the famous black box used in airplanes to record flight data.

For now, I bid you farewell with that well-known traditional Australian phrase: “That’s not a knife. This is a knife!” Did I get that right?

  6. Wow, the display at the Visitor’s Center in Mesa is incredible. Powerful, moving, inspiring. Anyone in the area needs to see this. See the photos first, then watch the 30-minute movie about how they were made, and then see the photos again.

Stunning, inspiring, amazing. I’ll write a post soon to describe the experience. Wow.

Todd, thank you so much. As I was looking at that last photo and thinking of the mercy of Christ and your own personal journey back to His Church, I noticed the beautiful music being played had changed to a marvelous rendition of Amazing Grace.

NM, you should have been there. It was really awesome! Yes, grace is the most wonderful news of all. And that photographic exhibit that helps hammer home the reality of Christ’s Atonement and grace was a marvelous gift to my soul.

  7. Awesome! I’m glad you got the chance to see it while you were here. I feel very fortunate to have had the chance to be a small part of the exhibit. It is powerful and moving – in so many ways. The piece has direct, personal meaning to me as building a personal testimony of Christ was the first step in coming back… Enjoy the rest of your week in AZ!

    Todd
