San Diego Temple

Also while in California in June, we briefly visited the San Diego Temple. Here is a night view that I photographed while standing in the parking lot of a shopping center on the other side of the freeway. It’s one of my favorite temples. (As with most photos posted here, you can click to enlarge, but I’ve only posted a low-resolution version 450 pixels wide.)

  1. I think it’s one of the ugliest we have. Certainly not uglier than Provo or Ogden, but still…

  2. As a former Mormon, I was somewhat embarrassed by it prior to my “apostasy,” now I’m horrified by it.

Its “in-your-face” location next to the freeway, and its space-ship design, scream “Kolob”…

  3. Kolob, eh? Well, I guess it does sort of hint at the dwelling place of God – but that doesn’t freak me out. Should I be spooked?

But I can see why it may strike some as too bold or in your face.

  4. I can’t imagine why someone would call the San Diego temple ugly. I work across the freeway from it at the Veterans Affairs Hospital and every day as I go to my car the majestic temple calls my name leaving me no good excuse not to attend that sacred House of God.

It was voted the most beautiful building in San Diego the first 3 years of its’ existence.

Beautiful or ugly though, the ordinances performed therein are the same all over the world and carry the same weight with the Heavens.

  5. Some people have limited esthetic tolerance …

I like it, thanks for sharing the photo. If you do a wallpaper version, let me know.

  6. “I can’t imagine why someone would call the San Diego temple ugly”

Maybe that’s because you live in the same state as Disney Land. 🙂

  7. I think ugly is our sin, The house of our Heavenly Father is in plain view of all who want to enter it, All that is asked of you is to repent of your sins, be baptised, gain a testimony that you believe Jesus Christ is our Savior and he died for us, the sinners, if you are horrified by the sight of it maybe you never gained a testimony as a former Mormon to appreciate the ordinances that take place in this and all the temples all over the world. May God bless the world that is every single person on it.

  8. I’m hoping my house in heaven looks like the Sandiego Temple. But I need to be REALLY good to shoot for that. Right now my house in heaven is probably a large refridgerator box painted white.

  9. I think the San Diego is one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. I have been brought to tears by simply seeing it, at Dusk. It is where my husband and I will be sealed for eternity. Thank you for the photo.

  10. why is it the ugliest temple? it is one of the most beautiful structures on this earth and it is suppose to be a representation of where the Lord Resides… how would you feel if someone came up to you and said your home was ugly??? not too good, i guess…

  11. Coming to the discussion very late– I’ve heard that one architect said that the San Diego temple is proof that the Mormons don’t believe in the separation of Church and Interstate.

  12. The San Diego temple is my favorite! Just different tastes i guess. Much better than all those identical ones from the 1999-2003 temple explosion.

  13. This temple is simply, awesome! I encourage anyone to take a few minutes and walk the temple grounds. Listen to you heart and you will fill the peace of the Lord like never before. It is white, and pure. This is truly a beautiful example of craftmanship at its finest. Let go of the hate, it makes you lose the peace. God bless.
