The Little Things

(Click photos to enlarge.)

The Book of Mormon tells us how the Lord often works great miracles through small means. Indeed, even in the coldest seasons of our lives when things seem to be in decay, we can find great prizes of beauty and wonder if we look. And in the lives of others who might seem old and shriveled, gifts of beauty and wisdom may be found if we get close enough to see the touch of the Lord’s hand in their lives.

So much of life is about noticing the little things. So much of our encounter with the Divine is found in the little things. Pay attention, and watch for the touch of the Lord all around us. It certainly makes life more wondrous, even in the winters of our lives.

Book of Mormon References:

First Nephi 16:29:
And thus we see that by small means the Lord can bring about great things.

Alma 37:6,7:
Now ye may suppose that this is foolishness in me; but behold I say unto you, that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small means in many instances doth confound the wise.

And the Lord God doth work by means to bring about his great and eternal purposes; and by very small means the Lord doth confound the wise and bringeth about the salvation of many souls.

  1. What a wonderful analogy, Jeff. Now send me some of those delicious looking cherries so I can feast on the word!! 🙂

  2. hanks.

Actually, they are crab apples and quite past their prime now, having been through several freezes. I did use some of them for added flavor and color in the apple sauce we make from our Jonathan apple trees. About 200 quarts this year – and we could have done 300 quarts of we had any more time. My wife’s recipe is amazing, a combination of chunks and strained apples, with a little cinnamon.

  3. As a photographer myself I see the hand of the Lord in all thing both great and small.
God Bless you for the things you do notice. Joe

  4. Jeff, I love photographs and those are especially beautiful. (I thought they were cherries, too!)

My mentor and I were talking about greatness once, and we said that greatness was like a tree in full leaf–and our daily actions were the leaves.

  5. I was cruising by your blog, and saw those beautiful pictures of the snowflakes on the crabapples. I called my wife down to the computer to look at them. I hope you don’t mind I am using them as wallpaper on my PC.

Great pictures, and a great blog. Keep up the good work.

  6. Gday Jeff,

Great photo. Just one question. Is that a real snowflake? I’ve never really had the chance to see snow and when I did I didn’t think about looking to see if they actually had a shape like that. I was too engrossed in trying not to kill myself on the snowboard.

  7. Yes, those are real snowflakes. The ones coming down in this light snow seemed to have a lot of similar-looking classic six-sided flakes with needle-like structures, like the ones in the photos.

  8. Hi Jeff – Great photos.

Peter – just a few words of addition for you on snow flakes.

Every single one that falls is different in some miniscule way. I prefer to think of the difference caused by the design of our Creator, in the same way that every human being is different. You will find similarities in snow flakes, but no two will be absolutely identical.

I used to watch them falling on my hand as a kid trying unsuccessfully to identify a pair before they quickly melted.

  9. “The sun, the moon, the stars, the beating of two hearts, how I love the simple things, the simple things just are.” That’s what this post reminded me of, thanks Jeff.
