From the Swamp

Not far from my house is a gas station next to a swampy piece of land. Seems like an ugly area, but on a bike ride the other day, I stopped and took a closer look. Swamps, for all their mosquitoes and microbes and decay, can be so beautiful. I took these photos and rode on, but resolved to stop by occasionally and see how the tiny “Black Swamp” is doing.

Mortality is often like a swamp, with its impassable natural barriers, lurking dangers, and blood-sucking sources of grief. Yet, for all its sorrow, the swamp can offer such beauty and such valuable learning, when we have the right perspective.

  1. I know, but deep in my heart, they will always be swamps to me.

Would like to say more on this topic, but I’ve got too much going on – I’m feeling really wetlanded.

  2. I think this is to be sung to the tune of “Stars and Stripes Forever.”

Be kind to your web-footed friends,
For a duck may be somebody’s mother,
Be kind to your friends in the swamp
Where the weather is always damp,
You may think that this is the end.
    Well, it is!
